Gifted Assessment
This assessment evaluates the child/ adolescent’s intellectual or cognitive ability to better understand strengths, relative weaknesses, and learning potential.
This assessment is typically required for entry into gifted programs within schools.
How do you know if you need this assessment?
Gifted children demonstrate a range of characteristics that set them apart from peers. For example, they may have had early language development and their vocabulary is more sophisticated and extensive. They may be quick learners and show strong reasoning skills. They are also often creative thinkers and they may make connections between seemingly unrelated concepts. They may also exhibit some boredom at school if they are not feeling challenged with the current academic program.
This assessment will help better understand if your child is gifted, what their strengths and relative challenges are, and what classroom setting is optimal for your child.
What to expect?
The gifted assessment includes an interview with the caregivers and testing of the child’s cognitive and academic abilities through a number of standardized tests. Clinician will then meet with the caregivers to go over the results of the assessment. Criteria for a placement in public gifted programs may vary slightly from district to district, but in general the requirements for most programs is for overall IQ score to be at the 98th percentile or higher and for the academic achievement to be above average.
